Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Officially Opens Doors at Covenant Classical School

Naperville Mayor A. George Pradel joins 87 students, their parents, and the faculty of Covenant Classical School to perform a ceremonial ribbon cutting to commemorate the opening of the K-10th grade school in Naperville.

Naperville, Illinois – August 25, 2010 – After months of preparation, planning, and much anticipation, the doors officially opened today at Covenant Classical School as 87 smiling students in Kindergarten through 10th grade arrived for their first day of the school year. The excitement level was high as children, parents and teachers gathered together for a ribbon cutting ceremony where Naperville mayor A. George Pradel cut the red ribbon to officially open the school.

“Good morning Covenant Classical School!” Mayor Pradel announced in full voice to the crowd. “I’m so glad to see you all here today and am so excited about the opening of Covenant Classical School in Naperville.” After the ribbon was cut, the uniform-clad students lined up in order by class to enter the building. They were given two warm welcomes to begin the day. First, a handshake and greeting from Covenant’s Head of School, Camie Perrin, followed by a “hello” and a “high five” from Mayor Pradel as they dispersed to their new classrooms and the brand new, full-size gymnasium at the Naperville Church of Christ, on 75th Street, where the school leases its space.

“We have a wonderful group of families here who are unified in their Christian faith as well as their desire to provide an exceptional education for their children. We are thrilled with the number of students who have enrolled at Covenant this first year,” Mrs. Perrin stated. “Clearly, we are meeting a need in the Naperville area community.”

Naperville Sports Weekly Kicks-off 4th Season August 29

Football highlights from all six area high schools, plus soccer, volleyball and golf

NAPERVILLE, IL – The NCTV17 sports production team is coming out of the huddle and into formation for an all new year of Naperville Sports Weekly, the only television program focused solely on Naperville area high school sports. The action-packed first episode of the 2010-11 season will premiere August 29 at 6:30 pm on Channel 17 in Naperville or at NCTV17.com through simultaneous video streaming. This year the fast-paced program will be produced and hosted by Ben Hutchison. Hutchison has been the sportscaster for Naperville News 17, reported last year for Naperville Sports Weekly, and most recently hosted the Naperville Little League Championship Games. Naperville Sports Weekly veteran Will Armistead is serving as Director.

The premiere episode will provide highlights of the first football games from each of the six featured high school teams: Benet Academy, Naperville Central, Naperville North, Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley. New Naperville North Football Coach Sean Drendel will visit the studio for an interview with Hutchison. And viewers will also get a first glimpse at boy’s soccer, girl’s volleyball, and girl’s golf. Once again, producers will select a Play of the Week.

Throughout the school year, the sports production team is out all week taping the various sporting events; a new show with highlights, scores, overtime features, and commentary begins airing every Sunday evening and airs multiple times a week. Naperville Public Library Board Installs New Officers

The Naperville Public Library Board of Trustees installed officers at its July meeting. Newly installed were Jerry Feldott as Vice President and Regina Johnson as Secretary. Sun Kwok was installed for second term as President.

Kwok is president and owner of Integral Corporation, a computer-consulting firm and Internet service provider that provides PCs, servers, networking and Internet services. Integral Corporation won the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce 2002 Small Business of the Year Award in Technology, and the Business Ledger‘s 2003 Award for Business Excellence. Kwok also received the Business Ledger’s 2003 Today’s Young Executive Award, and a 2009 Award of Excellence from the Illinois State Board of Education, as well as Outstanding Business Partner awards and recognition from Loaves & Fishes, Naperville School District 203, and the Naperville Education Foundation. He has served on the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 2005-2007 and was Vice Chair in 2005. He is the 2011 President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Naperville. Local Group Plans Inaugural Day of DotNetNuke - Chicago

NAPERVILLE, IL – August 10, 2010 – Jim Nagy of J&S Tech Designs and Don Gingold of Gnu Ventures Company have been tapped to help organize the first Day of DotNetNuke in Chicagoland which will be held on Saturday, October 2 at the Northern Illinois University – Naperville Campus.

Gingold and Nagy, who founded the Chicago Area DotNetNuke Users Group in 2009, were approached by the St. Louis users group to organize Day of DotNetNuke - Chicago 2010 in a joint effort with Cuong Dang and Ian Robinson of R2integrated.

Programmers, developers and users are invited to share their experience and knowledge as they network with other DotNetNuke community members. The Call for Speakers is now open and DNN experts, especially in the Chicago area, are invited to submit their proposals for topics related to the DotNetNuke web application framework. Attendees will be able to choose sessions on topics such as Design, Mobile applications, Administration and Development.

The first Day of DotNetNuke was held in Tampa in 2009, based on a concept by Will Strohl who is currently a sales engineer for DotNetNuke Corporation. The event’s charter dictates that the Day of DNN be a free event to serve those who are interested in learning about DotNetNuke, the world’s largest .NET-based Open Source web framework.

The Chicago Area DotNetNuke Users Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the Microsoft offices in Downers Grove starting at 7:00 pm. The meetings are open to developers as well as business admins who use the DNN content management web platform. Pizza and pop are provided by PowerDNN for this after hours meeting.

Art imitates history – Jini Clare writes coffee-table book about Century Walk and its artists

(Naperville, IL) -- Naperville’s outdoor gallery of sculptures, murals, and mosaics is seen by all who visit the city’s downtown area or who stroll along the Riverwalk, but the significance of this impressive collection of public art is rarely understood. Now, a colorful coffee-table book, entitled Century Walk: Art Imitating History, written by Jini Clare, president of Clare Communications, brings 35 pieces of art together in one place and guides readers through an appreciation of the artworks and the talented artists who created them.

It took the author more than two years, 112 pages, and 300 photographs to adequately tell the story of Naperville’s Century Walk, a public art project that began in 1995. “It was a labor of love,” she admits. “I served on the Century Walk Board for 12 years and thoroughly enjoyed watching the creative process of each piece. But when I spoke with the artists and learned how art impacted their lives, I realized that their stories needed to be an essential part of this book.” It took Clare months to locate the artists or their family members and interview them.

In fulfilling its original mission to honor significant people, places and events of twentieth century Naperville, Century Walk has led in the creation of a remarkable gallery of art produced by accomplished sculptors, mosaic artists, and muralists. According to Clare, “Many people will be surprised to learn that Century Walk features artists who are known nationally and internationally or who are leaders in their fields. One of our artists, Emanuel Martinez, has three pieces of art in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Another, Dennis Smith, had one of his sculptures, Signing the Constitution, placed in American Embassies in London, Moscow, and Prague. Dick Locher, who created the Dick Tracy sculpture, is well-known internationally and even earned a Pulitzer Prize.”

Anderson’s Bookshops will host a book-signing event for this beautiful four-color book at Wentz Concert Hall on July 28 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., followed by a reception. The artists have been invited to participate in the event and sign books as well. At least 18 artists plan to attend.

The book-signing event is open to the public. Anyone wishing to attend is asked to stop by Anderson’s Bookshops at 123 W. Jefferson Avenue in Naperville or to phone the store at 630-355-2665 and receive a free ticket. The Century Walk book is available at Anderson’s and retails for $39.99. Profits help support Century Walk, a 503 (c) (3) nonprofit organization.

“We really hope there will be a good turnout for this event,” said Brand Bobosky, president and founder of Century Walk Corporation. “So many people in the community helped to make this public art project successful, and this book helps to acknowledge their support and honor them. The book signing and reception is our way of saying ‘Thank you.’”

Century Walk: Art Imitating History was commissioned by the Century Walk Corporation and was financed by a City of Naperville Special Events and Cultural Amenities (SECA) grant and by developers Dwight and Ruth Yackley, owners of BBM Incorporated. The book was beautifully designed by Lisa Johnson and Jack Jacobi of Gerard Design in Warrenville and was printed in Ohio by RR Donnelley. Photographs in the book were taken by Don Manderscheid, Robert McKendrick, and others.

While considering this book to be the most rewarding and challenging project of her career, Clare has published several other books about Naperville. They include the popular Naperville Area Handbook and Guide, a coffee-table book entitled Naperville: Reflections of Community, and a book illustrated by local artist Jim Weren entitled Naperville's Riverwalk: Where History and Community Flow Together.

Mayors Golf Outing Celebrates 30 Years of Giving Back to Local Charities

Naperville, IL - September 13, 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the Naperville Mayors Golf Outing. This annual event was started in 1980 with Mayor Chet Rybicki and Bill Brestal of Dommermuth, Brestal, Cobine & West Ltd. This began as a means to allow the Mayor the opportunity to give back charitably throughout the year. We felt a golf outing would be a fun way of doing that, said Brestal.

The very first golf outing was held at Cress Creek Country Club with 125 golfers. Brestal remembers that back then, it was all about friends and fun we never cared if you could golf, as long as you were having a good time and giving back to our community. Today, the same holds true. This years outing will be held at Springbrook Golf Course with an opportunity to golf in either the morning or the afternoon.

Thirty years later, Brestals office is still planning the outing. We have a policy of always being involved and giving back to the community. We continue this tradition because it is a way for our employees to actively give through a fun, community event, said Brestal.

This day holds special meaning for me, says Mayor Pradel. It really makes an impact on the charities that benefit from our outing. Over the years, Chet Rybicki, Peg Price, Sam Macrane and myself have had the honor of donating over $1.5 million to worthy causes. We couldnt do that without the tremendous community support weve received through the years.

Local Web User Group Pets a Rhino

On July 10, the Chicago Area DotNetNuke User Group (CADUG) enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour at Lincoln Park Zoo. CADUG was founded by Chamber of Commerce members Don Gingold of Gnu Ventures Company and Jim Nagy of J&S Tech Designs, along with Mike Riley of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The tour was arranged by fellow member Edward Wilkerson, a software programmer at the Zoo. Wilkerson and a zookeeper took CADUG members and their families into the back rooms of the Regenstein African Journey exhibit. Ricko, a young black rhinoceros who moved from Birmingham last year for mating purposes, good-naturedly came out of his outdoor pen and into his stall to meet his fans. He even let CADUG members pet him while the zookeeper fed him carrots.

CADUG also had a tour of the DotNetNuke website Edward has built for the Zoo. In response to Avian Flu, West Nile Virus and other diseases that affect both animal and human populations, the Zoo Animal Health Network was created to help identify and prepare for animal health issues. Lincoln Park, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the USDA developed a network to record data and monitor disease trends. The amount of information they collect and store online is staggering and they also use the website to process data and generate reports.

Jim Nagy and Don Gingold recently joined forces to form Sprocket Websites to help businesses and organizations with their online presence. Holding two conferences a year, the group exists to connect area staff working with the Innovative computer system so that they may share their experiences, frustrations, ideas and training materials.

At the Naperville Public Library, Bultman is the administrator of the Innovative software. She will serve as Chair Elect July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011 and as Chair July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012.

CMS’ Mary Davolt Joins Product Advisory Council

Lellbach Builders Win Annual Award for Business Excellence

(Naperville, IL – March 8, 2010) Lellbach Builders were announced as one of the recipients of the Business Ledger’s Annual Awards for Business Excellence for 2010.

The awards recognize business achievement, growth and community involvement in companies, business organizations and non-profits. They are being presented to suburban companies and organizations for the twentieth time.

Northwestern College New Hire

Northwestern College (NC), one of Chicago’s oldest career colleges, with campuses in Chicago, Bridgeview, and Naperville recently hired Adam Grosch to fill its Campus Director position.

Adam Grosch, 36, Chicago, will be located at 1809 North Mill Street (near I-88 and Naperville Road). Grosch has spent seven years in higher education. He came to Northwestern College from the Harris School of Business, a proprietary college that serves residents in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, as the Regional Director of Admissions/Sales. Previously, he held positions as the Corporate Director of Admissions/Sales at Antonelli College, serving students in Ohio and Mississippi, and as the Director of Admissions for Westwood College, in Georgia and Chicago.

“We’re pleased to add Adam to the Northwestern College family,” said Lawrence W. Schumacher, President, Northwestern College. “He possesses the kind of experience needed to recruit talented students to become valuable members of the workforce.”

Not-For-Profit Kids Teen Rider Ramps Up Service to Keep Kids Safe on the Road

After Tiffany Stephens’ teenaged son was involved in a bad accident riding with a friend to an after-school destination, Stephens began to think about how many kids are looking for rides throughout the day when their parents may be working or otherwise unavailable. “In talking with parents and kids, I came to realize this was a huge need. With parents working and kids so active, safe reliable transportation becomes a critical need.” Two years ago Stephens founded Kids Teen Rider, a transportation service to drive students safely to and from before- and after-school activities, day care facilities and jobs around Naperville.

“We started out strong, serving ten schools, but with the economy the way it has been, a number of parents couldn’t afford to keep paying. That’s when we had to cut back,” Stephens reports. “It takes a certain amount just to pay for gas and maintenance, before you ever think about profit. But it was a service desperately needed, so we had to find a solution that was affordable.” That solution came in the form of 501c3 status, which allows Kids Teen Rider eligibility for grant funding and assistance from school districts. “Once we get our status, with the city grants and anticipated assistance from Indian Prairie District 204 by 2010-2011, we will be able to request much more affordable donations from riders. We are also looking for corporate angels to get us through these first few months.”

Right now, Kids Teen Rider is serving Indian Prairie Preschool along with students attending Brookdale and Longwood Elementary schools on Naperville’s northwest side. There are also some individual routes to accommodate students in private schools.
