Destination Springfield Recap |

Last week the Chamber hosted Destination Springfield 2012 in conjunction with the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the Illinois Chapter of the National Federation of Independent Businesses. In all, 375 business and chamber leaders from across the state registered for the summit.
“This was one of the largest crowds in recent memory and we hope that we can continue to build momentum for taking the bold action needed to solve our state’s long-term financial challenges,” said John Schmitt, president & CEO of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce. “We continue to encourage our elected officials to take bold steps, pass real reforms and help put Illinois back on a path to fiscal solvency.”
In addition to the keynote presentation by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, the summit featured prominent business leaders, roundtable discussions and visits to the state capitol.
“The Chamber and Legislative Committee take seriously our responsibility to be a source of education on the issues confronting our business community,” said Rosemarie Breske Garvey. “Having the opportunity to hear directly from Gov. Walker, who is in the center of an ongoing national debate, was an interesting and valuable educational opportunity. The Chamber will always be a venue for debate and discussion, from a variety of viewpoints and perspectives.”
Following the summit, Members spent the afternoon in the capitol visiting with officials. In candid discussions in their offices, Members encouraged officials to take action on the major issues facing our state, while continually emphasizing that waiting isn’t a viable option.
“I want to thank the members who took time away from their offices to join us in Springfield,” continued Schmitt. “We are fortunate to have committed business leaders willing to learn, engage and participate in our legislative process. To be successful in politics requires great patience, understanding of the issues and the ability to forge compromise – the talented Members of our Chamber understand these ideas and were expert advocates on your behalf last week.”
