Liz Spencer arrived at Naperville Community Television, Channel 17 (NCTV17) in 2002. Since then, she has used her Emmy award-winning TV background to transform a small local cable-access station into a true local not- for-profit television station. In 2006, she anticipated the digital movement and the station began streaming programming on their website, NCTV17.com. Now, NCTV17 is available on multiple platforms including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
Spencer developed a unique fund raising model for NCTV17 that goes beyond the traditional galas and golf outings. Using NCTV17’s strong understanding of the community it serves, Spencer spearheaded the Production Services wing of NCTV17: producing web videos for area businesses and other not-for-profits. Not only does this provide affordable multimedia solutions for clients, it is a strong revenue generator for a station dedicated to serving every aspect of its community.
Considering herself a storyteller at heart, Spencer’s passion for preserving local history and stories has resulted in the production of more than 19 documentaries in the past decade. Each “forever” piece brings to life stories of local significance such as: the town founder, Joe Naper, the Naperville Riverwalk and most recently, the first 150 years of North Central College.
Dedicated to teaching and mentoring the next generation of broadcast professionals, Spencer has expanded NCTV17’s highly regarded internship program and also serves as Adjunct Faculty at North Central College where she teaches television production.
While Spencer herself has been the recipient of numerous local awards she is most proud of NCTV17 winning the 2008 Chamber Small Business of the Year award in the Not-for-Profit category. This award not only recognized her leadership but the hard work of her talented staff.
When Spencer is not out covering an event or working on a documentary she can be seen literally running around town, as she is an avid runner. Spencer also enjoys a good craft beer and conversation with friends with whom she regularly shares little factoids about Naperville. Spencer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Hope College and a Master of Science degree in Communication Management from Northwestern University.
