The first Presidential debate is officially in the books and it didn’t disappoint. I’ll leave the analysis to smarter folks, it’s been done better than my meager attempts. The one takeaway I do have is that we all must vote. No matter where you stand on the presidential election there is a lot more at stake in November. There are significant decisions to be made up and down the ballot.
For example, the U.S. Senate race is key to both parties’ November strategy. In the Illinois General Assembly, there are contested races for the 81st Congressional District to the east, the 42nd Congressional District to the northeast, and in the 84th Congressional District to the west.
There are also contested state senate races. Both parties have fielded candidates in the 25th District to the northwest and the 49th District to the south.
And that’s just some of the races in the Illinois General Assembly. There are DuPage County and Will County Board seats up, statewide offices contested, and more. I can’t possibly list all the races for the all the jurisdictions here.
Let me put it like this, if you’re happy with the state budget disaster then by all means stay home. For everyone else, I’ll look forward to seeing you in November.
Another issue that will be on the November ballot is the Illinois Safe Roads Amendment. On September 20, 2016, the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to support the Illinois Safe Roads Amendment. We encourage Members to VOTE YES on the Safe Roads Amendment in November.
The issue is a voter referendum that will take transportation appropriations and place them in a lock box. Over the past ten years approximately $6 billion worth of appropriations have been diverted away from infrastructure development. Meanwhile, nearly 50% of roads in Illinois are in “poor condition.”
What we need, is to use the appropriations our state collects to maintain our aging infrastructure on the same. Let’s stop politicians from raiding the cupboard and provide some fiscal discipline to those that clearly need a refresher.
