I don’t have an extended metaphor or a pithy one liner today. The cold hard truth is that while we need a state budget, it will not solve Illinois’ fiscal crisis alone. It’s absolutely necessary, but in no way sufficient to set Illinois on the path for growth.
Still, it is a necessary step and the General Assembly has until the end of the month. Let’s hope they don’t take that long and the Governor signs a full and balanced budget before June 30th. Then, we can turn to the necessary work on policies that encourage growth.
In more positive news, the City Council approved an ordinance that will allow for alcohol service on sidewalk patios in the downtown core. The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors supported this initiative. It is a reasonable proposal that includes aesthetically pleasing fencing, controls on who can carry alcohol from one location to another, revenue generating permits, and a mandatory one year sunset.
The vote was five to three. Mayor Chirico, Councilwoman Broadhead, Councilman Coyne, Councilman Krummen, and Councilman White voted in favor of the ordinance. Councilwoman Boyd-Obarski, Councilwoman Gustin, and Councilman Hinterlong voted against the ordinance. Councilwoman Anderson was not present for the meeting.
Finally, the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce is conducting a survey to evaluate our impact on community and how we help your business specifically. So, we need your help!
Please follow the link and complete the survey, if you have not done so already. It only takes a couple of minutes, and your feedback in invaluable. In turn, we are offering a $50 Downtown Gift Card to one random participant. Thank you for taking the time to help us understand the value of the NACC to you and our community.
