As the calendar flips to 2015, what resolutions have you made? Do you want to lose weight, make more money, read more, or learn something new? Unfortunately, the odds are against you. Of the 50% who actually make resolutions, 88% will fail.
How can you beat the odds and succeed? Ditch the resolutions and create SMART goals instead, but with a twist. You’ve heard of SMART goals before; goals that are:
But I would contend that there should be one more point to the 5 above – WHY! What’s your why, your motivation, your reason for establishing the goal in the first place? In order to be truly successful, you need a compelling reason to see your goal through to the end. Find that reason within you and keep it front of mind. If you are procrastinating, making excuses or just not finishing, your ‘why’ is not big enough.
Once you have your ‘why’ in mind, remember that it takes 21 days to make something a habit. Make sure you build that into your SMART goal and don’t give up after a couple days or even a couple weeks.
So ditch the resolutions, think SMART, remember to ask WHY, and give yourself the time it takes to create a lasting habit. Wishing you success in this new year!
