From Nicki Anderson: Naperville City Council, New Local Sales Tax

IMG_6469Dear Members,

n

n

I wanted to share an update from last week’s meeting regarding sales tax.

n

Tomorrow the Chamber’s Board of Directors will meet and discuss the proposed Home Rule Sales Tax. Once the Board has reached a  formal position, we will be releasing that information to you, our Members, the press and the City Council.

n

As a reminder, the City of Naperville is proposing a 1{c041bec6d9ed93c692e2796704d5a7ba8e28982eb813f65c9daba57dcb2d46af} sales tax to help offset debt and to payback reserves that have been spent down. Although this sounds like a logical solution, historically the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce does not support a sales tax increase as it’s presented.

n

The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce is a pro-business organization. Our job/my job is to make sure that we’re doing all we can to help our businesses thrive.

n

Currently, the City of Naperville does not have an additional sales tax (beyond the 7.25), something we are proud of and allows us to be competitive. Surrounding communities have a 1{c041bec6d9ed93c692e2796704d5a7ba8e28982eb813f65c9daba57dcb2d46af} or 1.25{c041bec6d9ed93c692e2796704d5a7ba8e28982eb813f65c9daba57dcb2d46af} additional sales tax. Adding a 1{c041bec6d9ed93c692e2796704d5a7ba8e28982eb813f65c9daba57dcb2d46af} sales tax would make us less competitive, not more competitive as some have asserted.

n

I ask you that check out the City of Naperville website, for a brief overview of what they are proposing. http://www.naperville.il.us/budget.aspx    Feel free to send your thoughts to the City Council to let your voice be heard. Here is access to the Council’s email,  http://www.naperville.il.us/council.aspx

n

The meeting to vote on this sales tax will take place tomorrow, August 18 at 7:00 p.m. at  the City of Naperville Municipal Building. We hope you can attend. If you’re interested in speaking, you’ll need to be there by 6:30 to sign up.

n

As a pro-business  organization,  I ask that you consider being part of this conversation and let your voice be heard, or bring your questions.

n

Feel free to reach out to me, nanderson@naperville.net with any questions, concerns or comments you may have.

n

See you tomorrow night.
