Although I try to divide my “reads” in to half motivational/inspirational and half historical fiction and biographies, I tend to go heavier on motivational reads. No matter where you are in life, no matter what you do for a living, those books often provide at least one take-away that can have a positive impact on where you are or where you’re going.
Some of the more consistent takeaways from my business focused books include, success comes to those that are willing to do the work. Another is having a mentor. Just about every book I’ve read believes in the power of a mentor. Finally, understand the power of the “the ask”. In other words, if you don’t ask, you’ll never know. Better to ask and have a “no”, versus not ask and wonder what the outcome might have been.
With all the books that I have read, the one message that is driven home over and over again is that starting a business, taking a risk isn’t easy. It’s hard, it’s scary and sometimes, you want to quit. There is story after story about those who overcame their limitations and finally realized their gifts and true calling. There is no shortage of books out there written to inspire, and I’m a sucker for every one.
Here are the most recent books I’ve read. I’d love to know what you’re reading and how it’s impacted your business journey.
- Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Khaneman
- I’m Possible by Jeremy Cowart
- Daring Greatly by Brene Brown
- Pre-Suasion by Robert Cialdini
Make it a great day!
